When lacking length and strength in the suit led by the opponents, the Rule of 7 helps to determine how many times to duck. Count the number of cards both you and dummy hold in the defenders' suit, subtract this number from 7 and hold up your winner that many times.

You have three hearts (Axx) and dummy two (xx) – altogether 5, duck 7-5 = 2 times before taking a trick with the A.
