Review of Bridge Baron 13

Rui Marques
Assist. Chief TD / European Bridge League

Bridge Baron 13 improves on a number of features over BB12, enriching the number of conventions available, tournaments, “Challenges”, etc. The graphical interface keeps the same structure as in BB12, which is a must for those already used to it, but the richness of features can sometimes become cumbersome for the less experienced user. I would concentrate my efforts on streamlining the interface. The “IQ” of BB12 seems to be the same for BB13 (my test deals, one of which was detailed in my previous review, develop in the same way for both versions). By the way, another interesting deal which details the amount of improvement that could be achieved is this one: S – H KT72 D KQJ42 C KT73 facing S AQJT72 H 943 D 98 C Q6. The bidding by BB13 started with 1D 1S 2H (!!!) 3S Pass (!!!) The reverse seems to take into account distribution points for the void in spades, but after 1S and 3S, BB13 passes in a situation absolutely forcing to game…

Bridge and Go are the most difficult “great games” to conquer, in terms of intelligent software, so do not expect to face bidding and play of the quality that Hamman, Zia and many others routinely produce live. However, just as BB12, BB13 continues to be one feature-rich program suitable for the beginner and the advancing player.
